Getting Creative with Rendering on Playdate

Just over 3 years ago I was working on a little prototype for a Playdate game, and I wanted to make use of some of the more unique aspects of the device. If I only had access to one colour, I figured it would be cool to lean into it and make a game that is all about navigating the darkness with a flashlight.

For the past half of the year, I've been on a tear to rid myself of any ties I've had to US-based tech. Among the first things to go were my subscriptions, one of which was for Google One, which I held purely for the additional storage space. I've been using Gmail for nearly 20 years, Drive for nearly 15, and Photos has probably had every picture I'd ever taken on my phone backed up on it for over a decade. So naturally, the storage starts to add up.

Baked Mesh Instance Animation Live Demo

Right click and drag the mouse to rotate the camera.

WASD to move the camera forward, backwards, left and right.

Q/E to move the camera up and down.

Scroll wheel to adjust the speed of the camera movement.

This is a simple demo of the Animation Baker addon I made for Godot 4. It's used to bake animations into texture data so that an astronomical amount of mesh instances can be rendered at once, all animated independently. This demo just randomly cycles between two animations for each instance to show the independence of the animation. You can use the input box in the top left to adjust the number of instances being rendered to see how it impacts performance.

New Year, New Blog

Every once in a while I get the urge to start a blog. Sometimes, I even do. Usually, I don't get very far with it.

I like to share my thoughts and express myself, but I guess I always get a little too self-conscious — is it too vain to shout into the void? To think that anyone cares? It always goes the same way: I'll get a couple of ideas out, clam up, and then shut the whole thing down, embarrassed to have been so exhibitionist, deleting the whole site from existence. I don't even know the number of websites that were dedicated to my output that have completely come and gone at this point.

And yes, I do like sharing things and expressing myself, but now I'm starting to wonder if I'm getting rusty at it. So here I am, once again giving it a go, if anything just so I don't lose the muscle.
